Sustainability in the Roads Sector:

Sustainability in road projects is achieved through the continuous maintenance of the road network as part of a systematic program. An annual field survey is conducted on the road network to determine the priorities for the maintenance programs of the main roads in a timely manner. Maintenance costs are lower when signs of initial maintenance needs first appear. Accordingly, damaged roads are added to the periodic maintenance schedule to improve their efficiency and traffic safety, ensuring their sustainability.

The sector is currently working on an initiative to use asphalt modified with recycled and treated plastic materials for road paving in collaboration with private sector companies. This initiative helps achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the Kingdom of Bahrain 2030, as it will reduce the amount of plastic waste accumulating in landfills in Bahrain, thereby contributing to environmental protection.

Sustainability in Sanitation:

The ministry is committed to providing services to citizens and residents by doubling efforts to implement its strategy for the sustainability of sanitation services, ensuring the safety and efficiency of operation and maintenance of all sanitation assets, including main and subsidiary sewer networks, pumping stations, and treatment plants. This also includes all operations for collection, treatment, distribution, and laboratory testing, which are conducted according to environmental standards. A preventive maintenance program is followed to ensure maintenance services for pumping station equipment and assets, thus preserving their efficiency and effectiveness, ensuring a healthy and safe environment for citizens and residents.

Sustainability in the Building Sector:

Since 2010, the ministry has been implementing sustainability requirements and green building systems in its projects by designing and executing projects that meet all green building standards and sustainability requirements for public buildings. Green buildings have contributed to reducing energy and water consumption, as well as reducing operational and maintenance costs. The ministry also works on modeling public building information and enhancing the effective use of technology in the building, construction, and maintenance sector. In addition to maintaining government buildings through comprehensive or preventive maintenance aimed at preserving the structural integrity of the buildings, improving their internal environment, extending their lifespan, ensuring their sustainability, and increasing their operational and economic value.

Among the initiatives in the building sector are green roofs in communities focused on improving and enhancing the environment. Green roofs have a positive impact on buildings by regulating their temperature, warming them in the winter and cooling them in the summer, thus rationalizing energy consumption. They also help absorb rainwater and reduce pollution by purifying the air.

The sector is also studying the feasibility of applying a comprehensive greywater treatment system in government projects to benefit from water from air conditioners and some greywater for irrigation and landscaping activities.
